Human Trafficking

Women should not be for sale

Why it Matters

Victoria Police have identified soaring numbers of sex slavery, forced marriage and child bride cases as a serious problem in the state.

During my time in Parliament I have heard some horrific stories of human trafficking in Victoria, from foreign workers being exploited and coerced, to the steady increase in sex trafficking through brothels.

My Solution

  • Genuine exit programs which enable prostituted women to escape the sex industry must be developed and implemented as a matter of urgency;
  • Legislative reform to prohibit the purchase of sexual services based on the successful Nordic model.

What I’ve Done

  • Delivered the deciding vote to pass the Labour Hire Licensing Bill 2017 which will help prevent trafficking for labour;
  • Convened strategy meetings with fellow opponents of human trafficking;
  • Advocated for increased funding for the Victoria Police Sex Industry Coordination Unit;
  • Prepared legislation addressing trafficking for the sex industry, to be introduced in the next term of Parliament.
